What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as “nose surgery,” is a cosmetic procedure that changes the shape and size of the nose. It can improve the appearance of the nose or correct breathing problems caused by injuries or the structure of the nose.

The nose is a complex structure, and in order to achieve excellent results, attention is required both to its appearance and to its function. In my practice, I believe that aesthetics and functionality are interconnected. Every rhinoplasty is a unique challenge, where surgical precision is combined with an artistic approach to achieve a natural and harmonious outcome.

Functional and Reconstructive Rhinoplasty

ALL RHINOPLASTIES MUST BE FUNCTIONAL, meaning that along with improving the appearance of the nose, they also address and prevent breathing difficulties, such as correcting septal deviation, turbinate hypertrophy, or nasal valve insufficiency.

Reconstructive rhinoplasty refers to the restoration of complex congenital, secondary, or post-traumatic nasal deformities. In these cases, open rhinoplasty is usually performed, and sometimes cartilage from the ear or even the ribs may be required.

The incisions to correct deformities are made inside the nose and are not visible.

  • Reshaping the nasal tip: Adjusting the size, shape, or angle of the nasal tip.
  • Correction of the dorsal hump: Reducing the prominence on the bridge of the nose.
  • Reduction of nasal size: if necessary.
  • Fractures of the nasal bones: This narrows the nasal base.
  • Correction of nostrils: Reducing the width of the nostrils or modifying their shape.

Closed Rhinoplasty

In addition to the internal incisions of closed rhinoplasty, there is a small external incision at the columella, the lower part of the nose, which becomes imperceptible once healed.

The procedures performed on the tip, the hump, and the nasal bones are similar to closed rhinoplasty, but we have better visibility and can accurately adjust the nasal features and correct extensive issues, such as severe septal deformities or particularly wide nasal tips, etc.

Types of Rhinoplasty

How the procedure is performed

Before the surgery, you will have a detailed session with your surgeon. During this session, we will:

  • Discuss the reasons for the procedure, whether for aesthetic changes, functional improvements, or both.
  • Review your expectations to ensure they align with realistic outcomes.
  • Explain the expected results, possible risks, and recovery process.
  • Assess the structure of your nose, including the condition of the cartilage, skin, and bones.
  • Evaluate your overall health to confirm you are a good candidate for surgery.
  • Discuss the anesthesia options suitable for your procedure.

Recovery After the Procedure

Immediate Post-Operative Period (What to Expect): Bandaging and Stabilization: A plaster or plastic splint is applied to the nose for stabilization and protection. Internal splints or packs may also be placed.
Swelling and Bruising: Visible around the nose and eyes, peaking on days 2–3. This is a natural bodily reaction.
Discomfort: Nasal congestion, mild pain, and difficulty breathing may occur due to the swelling and the presence of the packs.

Care Instructions:
  • Use the prescribed ointments and drops regularly.
  • Avoid getting the splint wet.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
Restrictions:
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity, hot beverages and foods, and exposure to high-temperature environments (like saunas or steam rooms).
