What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a modern and highly effective procedure aimed at rejuvenating the upper and lower eyelids, addressing both congenital features and age-related changes. The results are impressive, offering a fresh, youthful appearance and improving the overall harmony of the face.

During blepharoplasty, excess skin or loose muscle is carefully removed, the muscles are strengthened, and adipose tissue is removed or precisely repositioned to refresh the eye area. The procedure results in a clean eyelid crease, which often disappears with age and sagging skin, creating a rested and natural appearance.
Blepharoplasty is one of the most common aesthetic procedures I perform, likely because the eyes are among the first features people notice on the face. Many patients seek this procedure to address a “tired look,” asking: “Doctor, can you make me look younger without changing my expression?”

Modern blepharoplasty techniques are designed specifically for this purpose. The current approach emphasizes not only skin tightening but also the restoration of lost volume. This careful balance ensures that the eyes look youthful and rejuvenated while maintaining their natural expression and functionality.

With results that can last for many years, blepharoplasty is an extremely satisfying option for those looking to enhance their appearance. The results can also be easily maintained with complementary aesthetic treatments, ensuring long-term satisfaction.

Lower blepharoplasty targets puffiness, sagging, loose skin, and wrinkles in the lower eyelid area. The incision is made just below the lash line and extends slightly beyond the outer corner of the eye, blending seamlessly with the skin and becoming nearly undetectable over time. This procedure smooths the lower eyelid area, reduces under-eye bags, and restores a rejuvenated, rested appearance.

Upper blepharoplasty focuses on eliminating sagging of the upper eyelids by removing excess skin. The incision is made in the natural eyelid crease, making it nearly invisible after healing. This procedure restores a youthful and refreshed look to the eyes, addressing sagging that may affect vision or create a tired appearance.

How the procedure is performed

Before your eyelid surgery, you will have a detailed one-on-one session with your surgeon. During this consultation, we will:
  • Discuss Your Goals: Talk about the reasons for the procedure, whether it's to address drooping upper eyelids, reduce under-eye bags, achieve a more refreshed look, or improve your field of vision.
  • Manage Expectations: Review what you hope to accomplish to ensure the goals are realistic and aligned with what the surgery can deliver.
  • Explain the Procedure: Outline the expected outcomes, detail the recovery process, and thoroughly discuss all potential risks and complications.
  • Assess Your Anatomy: Carefully evaluate the structure of your eyelids, including skin elasticity, muscle tone, the presence of fat pockets, and any asymmetry.
  • Review Your Health: Conduct a general health evaluation to ensure you are a suitable candidate for a safe procedure and recovery.
  • Choose Anesthesia: Discuss the anesthesia options that are most appropriate and comfortable for your specific case.

Recovery After the Procedure

During the first 24 hours, screens should be avoided, and intermittent ice packs should be applied to the eyes. After 1–2 days, adhesive strips on the eyes may need to be replaced if soiled. Throughout the week after surgery, sleep with your head elevated using 2–3 pillows.
